What is the best type of flooring for dogs? This is a question we get asked quite often. As most of you already know, we currently have three Siberian Huskies, and with three indoor dogs, choosing the right flooring for our home is very important. When researching our new floors, we knew we wanted something that was easy to take care of, durable, and not slippery on the dogs feet. After a lot of searching, the clear answer became Pergo.
Pergo has many different types of flooring, and I could go into a lot of detail about all of them and the differences, but that’s not what we are going to do. Instead I am going to tell you why we choose to put in Pergot Outlast+ in the Vintage Pewter Oak color throughout the majority of our home.
Reason #1: SpillProtect24™ technology
When you have dogs (or children as well), it’s inevitable that things are going to get spilled on to your floor. Cups tipped off of tables by tails, water bowls being splashed in or spilled, dropping your coffee because someone was so excited to tell you good morning, spills will happen. And it’s not just the spills! Think of the water tracked in during the winter, and during the rain. The wet paw prints they leave behind with little spots of water along with them. And, of course, accidents do happen as well (puppies, older dogs, it happens). When we found out about the SpillProtect24™ technology with the Pergo Outlast+, I knew this was going to be the perfect floor for our lifestyle! The SpillProtect24 defends against household spills for up to 24 hours, which gives you time to clean up messes without worrying about the floor being damaged.
Reason #2: Durability
Weather you have one dog in your home, or multiple dogs in your home, having a durable floor is very important. No matter what you do, your dogs are going to want to play and run around inside your home, so having a floor that can withstand all of that is extremely important. The durability of the Pergo Outlast+ is outstanding. We have had the flooring installed for just over a month, and have had no issues at all! The dogs have run up and down the hallways, done zoomies in the living room, wrestled like champions, and we have not any issues, and as you know, Huskies play hard!
Reason #3: The Texture
When you have older dogs, having a floor that they can keep their footing on is extremely important. Our oldest dog, Oakley, can sometimes have problems getting around, so when we were looking for new flooring, we carefully inspected the texture of each sample. The Vintage Pewter Oak Pergo Outlast+ has a very slight texture to it. It almost feels like a true wood grain, which makes it so the dogs actually have decent grip on the floor. Now not all of the flooring has the same texture, so be sure to get some samples at your local Home Depot and feel them to make sure you find the right fit. If the dogs are in a full run, they will still slip a bit on the floor, but so would a human! The texture of this floor allows them to walk without slipping with each step. Oakley can easily lay down, sit down, and get up without needing our help. She has the grip she needs with this floor.
Reason #4: Easy to Clean
Huskies shed a lot. They shed 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The fur never stops. When we were deciding on a floor, I knew it had to be easy to keep clean. With the Pergo Outlast+, all you need is a good dust mop, and a spray mop and you are set. We try to use the dust mop on the floor at least once a day. During heavy shedding seasons of our huskies we will use our hard floor attachment for our vacuum cleaner as well. Every few days we use our spray mop filled a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water (straight vinegar makes the dogs sneeze like crazy) and we mist and mop the floor. You should never soak the floor, just a very light mist mopping is all it needs. It probably takes me 20 minutes to mop the house.
Reason #5: The Color
Now to some people, this might not seem that important. Most people pick the color of the floor based on their home, and their furniture. Not us. We picked the color based on the color of dog fur! This flooring was the perfect color for hiding the dog fur in between the cleanings! It matches all of the dogs undercoats perfectly!
Reason #6: Easy Installation
This goes without saying. This floor was so easy to install, my husband and I did it all on our own. I think just about anyone with a bit of patience could do this on their own. Even with the dogs trying to get in our way, we were able to install this flooring on our own in a matter of days. Here is a video of parts of our installation process:
What is the best flooring to install in your home when you have dogs? I have to say that the Pergo Outlast+ is our flooring of choice. We could not be happier with our decision to install this flooring in our homes. We hope that we have helped you decide what type of flooring to install in your homes as well! #PergoDogs
